FP7 ITARS ITN: 11 Early Stage Researcher Positions in Atmospheric Science
Applications are invited for 11 PhD positions to work in the ITARS ('Initial Training for Atmospheric Remote Sensing') Network. ITARS is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) within the FP7 programme. ITARS aims at improving our understanding of aerosols, clouds, and aerosol-cloud interaction processes and their role in both climate and weather. For this purpose, the PhD projects will focus on high-end ground-based remote-sensing instrumentation, synergistic observations and/or mathematical methods.
The 11 posts are available for 3 years at the following institutions:
- National Institute for Research and Development in Optoelectronics (INOE) / University of Bucharest, Romania;
- Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona Tech; UPC), Spain;
- Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis (CNR-IMAA) / University of Basilicata (Potenza), Italy;
- University of Potsdam, Germany;
- University of Reading, United Kingdom;
- Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands;
- Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (IfT), Leipzig, Germany;
- University of Cologne, Germany;
- National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece.
Salaries will be commensurate with a Marie-Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) position.
Single projects will focus on:
- Modification of aerosol optical properties due to humidity from lidar and microwave radiometer (ESR1);
- Signal processing and data fusion between multi-spectral lidar and radiometer sensors: Algorithms and error estimation (ESR2);
- Synergy between Doppler radar and Raman lidar for aerosol investigation (ESR3);
- Microphysical retrieval of aerosol parameters using multi-wavelength lidar and depolarization signals (ESR4);
- Cloud-radiation parameterisations based on 3D radiative transfer and sensor synergy (ESR6);
- Observation of crystal habits and sizes in ice / mixed phase clouds (ESR7);
- Combination of Doppler lidar and Doppler radar measurements to study vertical motion in context with ice formation in clouds (ESR8);
- Investigating cloud sub-grid variability from scanning micro-wave radiometer and cloud radar (ESR10);
- Improvements of Integrated Profiling Technique (IPT) by inclusion of lidar (ESR11);
- Study of the planetary boundary layer and its influence on cloud development (ESR12);
- Investigation of the performance of Air Quality Modelling (AQM) in forecasting the distribution of pollutants over Europe (ESR13).
